The Clients Perspective
Basic Quality Assurance
To obtain basic installation quality assurance it is recommended to include the following text within contractual requirements:
“This technical specification requires that the installation and testing of optical fibre cabling is undertaken by a member of the FIA who commits to applying the elements of the FIA Risk Index available on-line at fia-online.co.uk/riskreduction which support the application of BS6701 and BS EN 50174 series standards.”
Using Accredited Installers
In addition, the FIA operates an Accredited Installer Scheme (click herefor current listing) which assesses the application of the risk reduction practices on an ongoing basis and which also requires the Accredited Installer to employ suitably experienced, competent and qualified staff, to use recognised techniques and suitably calibrated test and inspection equipment in accordance with published standards.
To provide additional assurance based on the AIS, it is recommended to use the following text within contractual requirements:
“This technical specification requires that the installation and testing of optical fibre cabling is undertaken by a member of the Fibreoptic Industry Association who is also an Accredited Installer under the Accredited Installer Scheme.”
As a client of an FIA Accredited Installer, you should expect a high standard of service and workmanship. In the unlikely event that you do not receive this, you have recourse for appeal to the FIA for a resolution of any relevant dispute.
An FIA Accredited Installer is required to comply with strict criteria and must apply the relevant elements of the FIA Risk Reduction Index to all work. The complete Index can be viewed by clicking here.
To work effectively, the scheme relies on clients to report any non-compliances or failures to implement the appropriate risk reduction practice. To report such situations contact the Installation Director or the FIA Secretariat (01763 273039)
