Mike Gilmore, long-standing FIA Standards Director, fibre expert and all-round infrastructure Guru, retires on 31st March 2020.

Jonathan Lewis will take up the reins of most national, and international standards committee work on behalf of the FIA, and has, in fact already started doing so.

Dr Nick Channon – past director of FIA:

The FIA is saddened to report the passing recently,  of Dr Nick Channon, a long-time professional fibre industry figure, and a past director of the Association.

Our sincere condolences to his family.

A short synopsis of his professional life, kindly provided by Andy Hallam, follows:

Dr Nick Channon was an early member of York Technology Ltd, joining shortly after the company was formed in Winchester in 1980. As a very able engineer he was able to think ‘outside the box’ and his contribution was fundamental to the success of a range of fibre characterisation products, which led to the Queens Award for Technology in 1986. Nick went on to become Engineering Director but always maintained a keen interest in problem solving. He was a member of the Fibre optic Industries Associations (FIA) and also contributed to standards development on the international stage at the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and the FOA (Fiber Optic Association) in America.

After a transfer of technology to the U.S. parent company in 1999, Nick went on to work at Megger (formerly AVO) in Dover where he was responsible for introducing optical fibre test equipment to the Megger range of electrical test equipment. A multimode OTDR was developed, featuring some novel ideas for two-way measurement, but this was eventually shelved when Megger pulled out of the optical fibre market. Nick then went on to engineering management positions at Meggitt Sensing Systems in Basingstoke, where he worked for many years on a range of sensors for aircraft engine control. These included an optical fibre based pyrometer system for temperature measurement of high pressure turbine blades. Nick was always respected as a ‘go to’ colleague for discussing tricky technical issues, in fact he was never more happy than getting involved in bench top problem solving. Even after retiring in 2013, he took on an electrical design project for Meggitt to help solve a tricky technical problem in pyrometer manufacture.

IET NHS Document:

‘Building Infrastructure for Healthcare ICT (Code of practice sponsored by the NHS, published by the IET)’

The above document has had full FIA input and will be published in coming weeks.

The document covers the benefits not only to healthcare organisations but also to cabling installers, consultants and others in the industry.

BSI affiliation:

FIA is a BSI Affiliate – meaning that anyone visiting the FIA website can click on the link to the BSI website, and any purchase made of standards, in either paper or electronic format, results in a small payment being made from BSI to the FIA (at no cost to the purchaser).

The BSI link on the FIA website (bottom of the FIA home page) goes directly to the BSI page where members can purchase standards.

If you are buying a standard document, even if your company is already a member of BSI, please use the FIA website – because the FIA receives a small percentage of your purchase price – and any discounts you normally receive will also be applied.

NOTE:  Any FIA member can share their news via this Newsletter.  Send all input to the Secretary, jane@fiasec.demon.co.uk
