We are also pleased to announce the appointment of 2 new faces in the FIA. Firstly that of a new Director – Martin Smith, who is head of Network Infrastructure division at CNET Training, full bio here. Secondly, we warmly welcome Steven Brown, Head of Operations at Coyles Communications, who will be working with the Council on a project-by-project basis.

Both Martin and Steven bring with them a great deal of knowledge and experience in the various communications markets and the FIA Council looks forward to working with them both.

CPR clarity

Due to its close participation in the creation of standards in the UK and Europe, the FIA’s standards representative, Mike Gilmore has regularly provided its membership with the most detailed and timely advice on the technical aspects of CPR and the implications of its contractual and commercial application in the UK Telecommunications cabling market. All documentation has been available and has been updated whenever any significant change has taken place.

The FIA’s official position and updated documentation can be found here. With the exception of Mike Gilmore, if any advice has been given by persons claiming to officially speak on behalf of, or with the support of the FIA, please inform the FIA secretariat as soon as possible by either calling +44 (0)1763 273039 or by email.

Mike Gilmore – IEC 1906 award

Mike Gilmore has been presented with the IEC 1906 award for 2018. The award is for work within the SC 25 WG 3 projects, the ISO/IEC 11801 series and as project leader in ISO/IEC 14763 series.

Mike delivers a fundamental contribution to the group, both in terms of technical and organisational aspects. He is a highly valued technical expert and, in his position, he has major influence on the group to find consensus in critical technical questions and discussion. Additionally, he takes care of the conformance to European standards, and in doing so drives the acceptance of IEC and ISO/IEC papers worldwide.

Experts from all of the IEC’s 61 member countries are eligible to receive IEC 1906 awards, which honours IEC experts around the world whose work is fundamental to the IEC. The Award also recognises exceptional and recent achievement – a project or other specific contribution – related to the activities of the IEC and which contributes in a significant way to advancing the work of the Commission. This year a total of 171 awards are being made to experts from 19 countries. The UK received a total of 17 awards.

The FIA Council warmly congratulates Mike on this award in recognition of his outstanding dedication to the work of international standardization.

Stolen Equipment Register

We have recently reinstated the Stolen Equipment register. We aim to publish the details of stolen equipment in order to assist members in recovering their equipment should the worst happen.

The register can be found here. It can also be found on the homepage.

Details required in order to report stolen equipment include the date stolen, Serial number of all items, full description and most importantly, the crime record number. There are links to allow you to report stolen equipment, and also to report that you have been offered stolen equipment.

CSCS/ECS Changes

There have been some major changes to the ECS and CSCS card schemes over the last two years. Firstly the network cabling industry now falls under the ECS card scheme rather than CSCS. ECS is an affiliate scheme of CSCS that covers the electrical, fire and security industries as well as network cabling. ECS cards hold the same rights and work in the same way as a CSCS card. The second major change, which has effected all card schemes is that all skilled workers must hold an industry recognised qualification related to their role. Anyone holding an unskilled or CSCS card will be advised to move over to an ECS Datacomms card on expiry of their existing card. For those who don’t already hold a qualification this will mean undertaking an industry recognised training program, information on the cards available and their requirements can be found at this link: https://www.ecscard.org.uk/card-types

The FIA Needs You!

The Fibreoptic industry Association has been representing and supporting optical technology for over 25 years. We do, however, recognise the changes in the marketplace and in order to embrace these changes and continue to provide a first class level of service to our members we are planning a series of questionnaires and interviews.

Frank Kler will be contacting you over the next couple of months to find out just what you need from the FIA.

If you have any pressing views or opinions then please feel free to email Frank here.
