In an age where fibre is being deployed further into our infrastructure, testing with an OTDR becomes more of a challenge for less skilled technicians. These technicians often have a host of duties to perform, so becoming an OTDR expert is difficult. Here we will explain the vital signs to look for in determining the OTDR characteristics and how modern day testing is changing how we make and analyse OTDR results.
11.15 am – Project Lightening – Peter Jamieson, Virgin Media
In 2015 Virgin Media announced that was going to invest £3 Billion to add 4 million homes to its network over 5 years. The roll out would bring ultra-fast broadband to these homes via a mix of HFC infrastructure and FTTP. The programme was called “Project Lightning”. This presentation will look back at the motives for the programme, touch on the technologies and techniques implemented, and look at the progress so far and the future.
12.00 pm – Understanding Multi-fibre connectivity – Best practices and lessons learned – Paul Avison or Tom Ronan, Fibre Technical Solution Manager, Viavi Solutions UK Ltd.
Fibre cabling advances like multi-fibre (MPO) connectivity increase your data capacity with a highly efficient use of space, whilst speeding installations. Increasingly used in Data Centre interconnections, ribbon fibre connectors are seeing growing demand in PON and mobile deployment applications. However, installers have faced challenges such as extra complexities and time required for testing and troubleshooting. This session reviews the latest trends, current standards and makes recommendations on best practices when installing or maintaining networks with multi-fibre MPO interfaces.
12.45 pm – FIA Standards update – Jonathan Lewis, FIA Communications Director
1.30 pm – Close
VIAVI has commissioned three training and education vehicles to tour Europe, bringing best industry practice and is equipped with the latest fibre optic test equipment for hands on demos. We are fortunate that one of these has taken time off from touring Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands and will be parked outside of the conference centre at Whittlebury Hall for this years FIA Summer Seminar.
There will be telecoms industry experts on board, ready to share their application and domain expertise as well as testing best practices needed for the fastest and most efficient network installation, deployment & commissioning.
There will be a simulated PON network on the vehicle to help with technical discussions. Equipment will include OTDRs, Optical power and insertion loss meters, Visual Fault tools and fully autonomous multi-fibre Inspection Microscopes.

Ministry of Defence – would you like to become a supplier?
The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) are British Industry’s largest single customer, spending around £16Bn per year on goods and services. In order to simplify the process of tendering for MoD business, the FIA, in conjunction with the MoD supply chain group, produced a simple one page Application Form which enables a fast-track approval for FIA members, details available here.
