Whittlebury Hall, Nr. Towcester, Northants NN12 8QH

4th-5th June 2018

Following the success of previous years events and in response to many requests for a repeat event this year, the FIA is pleased to announce the 2018 Summer Seminar, which, once again, combines a full schedule of seminars spread across two days and a mini-exhibition with the opportunity to network during the evening with a drinks reception followed by a 3-course dinner with after-dinner speaker in a private room.

The event is open to FIA members and non-members alike.

AGENDA

GUEST SPEAKERS

Mark Guest – Liquid Telecom

Fibre Network Deployment in MEA

“With continued growth for Liquid Telecommunications within the Continent of Africa, here we will touch on their history and network time lines. Encompassing deployment techniques, centered on standardisation of network assets, practices and environmental considerations.”

Steve Silver – The University of Warwick

An Insight into Infrastructure from the Client’s Side

“An insight in to what the infrastructure team within a UK top 10 university does to keep its students, staff and customers connected across a large campus environment.

From installing a phone to designing and overseeing the installation of an infrastructure in a new £100M building.”

Peter Jamieson – Virgin Media

Project Lightening

“In 2015 Virgin Media announced that was going to invest £3 Billion to add 4 million homes to its network over 5 years. The roll out would bring ultra-fast broadband to these homes via a mix of HFC infrastructure and FTTP.  The programme was called “Project Lightning”.  This presentation will look back at the motives for the programme, touch on the technologies and techniques implemented, and look at the progress so far and the future.”

Martin Warne – Senior Technical Sales Engineer – EXFO

OTDR – Back to Basics

“In an age where fibre is being deployed further into our infrastructure, testing with an OTDR becomes more of a challenge for less skilled technicians. These technicians often have a host of duties to perform, so becoming an OTDR expert is difficult. Here we will explain the vital signs to look for in determining the OTDR characteristics and how modern day testing is changing how we make and analyse OTDR results.”

Paul Avison – VIAVI Solutions

Understanding Multi-fibre Connectivity – Best Practices and Lessons Learnt

“Fibre cabling advances like multi-fibre (MPO) connectivity increase your data capacity with a highly efficient use of space, whilst speeding installations. Increasingly used in Data Centre interconnections, ribbon fibre connectors are seeing growing demand in PON and mobile deployment applications.  However, installers have faced challenges such as extra complexities and time required for testing and troubleshooting. This session reviews the latest trends, current standards and makes recommendations on best practices when installing or maintaining networks with multi-fibre MPO interfaces.”

Ian Morse – Chief Fibre Optic Engineer – Openreach

The Challenges of Delivering Large Scale FTTH in the UK

Carl Roberts – Corning Optical Communications

Next Generation Multi-mode Fibre Technologies

FIA SPEAKERS

Standards Update – Jonathan Lewis

FIA Web site update – Alan Bullen

FIA Qualification Scheme – TQC (Training & Qualifications Committee) update – John Colton

EVENING

Drinks Reception

3-Course Dinner

After Dinner Speaker:  Dr. Simeon Barber – The Open University

“From Mars to Moon and Back Again: Space Missions and a Search for Water in the Solar System. (Or, why £500,000 for a pint might be a bargain!)

VIAVI TRAINING VAN

VIAVI has commissioned three training and education vehicles to tour Europe, bringing best industry practice and is equipped with the latest fibre optic test equipment for hands on demos. We are fortunate that one of these has taken time off from touring Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands and will be parked outside of the conference centre at Whittlebury Hall.

There will be telecoms industry experts on board, ready to share their application and domain expertise as well as testing best practices needed for the fastest and most efficient network installation, deployment & commissioning.

There will be a simulated PON network on the vehicle to help with technical discussions. Equipment will include OTDRs, Optical power and insertion loss meters, Visual Fault tools and fully autonomous multi-fibre Inspection Microscopes.
