When EN 50174-1 and EN 50174-2
were published in 2001, they were the first Europe-wide installation
standards for the installation of information technology cabling.
They both contained flaws - as do the first editions of most standards.
Some of these flaws were obvious and further clarifications were
required as BSI updated its existing telecommunications cabling
installation standard, BS 6701, in 2004. Subsequently, the structure
of BS 6701:2004 with its clear definition of roles and responsibilities
became the foundation of the second editions of EN 50174-1 and EN
50174-2.
For the last three years work
has been going on to revise the two standards in order to deliver
the same statements of roles and responsibilities, correct the earlier
flaws and add value to the requirements. This became vital once
the new EN 50173 series of standards made the application of the
EN 50174 series mandatory.
All that work has now been completed
and the final “voting” drafts are to be circulated in
Q3. These documents are technically stable and are hugely significant
for the following reasons - BS 6701 will have to be revised, and
yet again simplified, to provide a correct reference to them; Installer
Approval schemes such as that operated by the FIA will have to be
updated and suppliers of installation accessories (such as trunking,
poles, traywork etc.) will be need to understand the changes in
order to provide correct instructions for the use of their products.
