This is a core unit of the Diploma and gives an understanding
of simple telecommunications networks, the types of signals used

communicating by light over optical fibres, characteristics of
waveforms and their variation to convey information in an analogue

of Local, Metropolitan and Wide Area data networks, purpose and

Unit 309 Communications Cabling for Enterprise Networks
This is an optional unit and consists of three sections, Communications
Cabling Projects (design and implementation), testing of copper
cabling (in an internal environment) and testing of fibre optic
communications cable in enterprise networks. It covers the use of
correct terminology and standards, communications cabling projects
and topologies used, preparation and costing of design of an IT
cabling project, testing of copper and fibre cabling to ensure compliance
with national and international wiring standards, fault detection,
documentation to certify system compliance, factors involved in
diagnosing failure to meet national and international network performance
standards. This is a seven day course.
