AIS REQUIREMENTS
Most approved installer schemes are based
upon strict acceptance criteria allied with minimal audit regimes.
Indeed, the Mk. I FIA AIS was based on this tradition.
In comparison,
a Mk. I FIA Approved Installer needs to do more than meet a set
of externally-defined criteria and, equally, the FIA provides considerably
more assistance on a day-to-day basis.
The publication
of BS 6701 in 2004 and the way in which it “locks in”
the other primary installation standards (BS 7671, BS EN 60825 and
the BS EN 50174 series of standards) was a major opportunity for
the FIA and its Approved Installer Scheme.
For the first time,
it became possible to embed risk-managed and best installation practices
into a single quality assurance tool.
The
Mk. II AIS has removed the requirement for ISO 9000 conformance
and the criteria of the personal competence.
So although, an Approved Installer is still required to provide
basic quality assurance and competency/training records information,
the fundamental requirement of the Mk. II scheme is to adopt and
fully implement the FIA Approved
Installer Database as a means of recording
the risk-assessments that apply to each installation. In return
the FIA is adding a significant degree of hyperlinked local and
on-line assistance which calls in the expertise of the FIA in
its standardisation activities.
In essence, the FIA Approved Installer Database
brings the Approved Installer and the FIA into a partnership in
support of risk-managed installations.
The
policing of the new scheme requires the project-by-project submission
of the basedata from the Approved Installer Database (all commercial
information removed). This allows statistical analysis of the records
by the FIA to determine industry trends and also enable installations
to be selected for audit against the specific record provided.
POLICING
THE APPROVAL SYSTEM
Each
Approved Installer will be asked, at least once per year, to select
a number of their installations from a shortlist prepared from those
submitted to the FIA Central Database. The selected installations
will be them be fully auditted by the FIA Approved
Installer Directorate.
